Anton Roolaart is a Dutch-American composer, singer, guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Amsterdam. His music moves through atmospheric art rock, progressive influences and intimate singer-songwriter storytelling, shaped by a lifelong fascination with melody, texture, mood and the emotional possibilities of sound.

Across three albums, Anton has developed a distinctive musical voice rooted in progressive and symphonic rock while remaining strongly personal and song-driven. His debut, Dreamer (2007, Umbrello Records), introduced a richly layered sound built around guitars, keyboards and cinematic arrangements. The Plight of Lady Oona followed in 2014, expanding that palette with a more mature and atmospheric approach.

In January 2026, Anton released his third album, The Ballad of General Jupiter, through MoonJune Records. The album reflects many of the qualities that have defined his work from the beginning: strong melodic writing, spacious arrangements, progressive detail and an interest in stories that unfold gradually rather than reveal themselves all at once. The release has brought renewed international press attention and marked an important new chapter in his artistic journey.

Anton’s performances range from intimate solo acoustic sets to full-band concerts. Over the years he has performed across Europe and North America, appearing at progressive rock festivals, theaters and smaller listening rooms. In 2026, he returned to European stages with performances in Belgium and Italy, including the MoonJune Festival, while continuing to develop his acoustic performances in the Netherlands.

Collaboration has also played an important role in Anton’s music. Over the years he has worked with a number of musicians from the progressive rock community, including Rave Tesar of Renaissance, with whom he developed a long-running creative relationship. These collaborations have helped shape the depth and color of Anton’s recordings while preserving the highly personal character at the center of his work.

Anton has also spent many years supporting the wider progressive rock community. He founded and operated ProgRockRadio.com, an online radio station devoted to progressive music, which he ran for a decade until 2016. Through the station, he supported both established and emerging artists and built lasting connections across the international progressive music scene.

Anton’s musical roots reach back to childhood. After his family moved to the United States, he grew up in a household where classical music was a constant presence, largely through his father’s love of the form. At the same time, Anton found himself drawn toward the adventurous music of the 1970s, especially artists such as Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, David Bowie, Cat Stevens and Neil Young.

Watching his older brother play in a rock band helped spark his own interest in making music. At around thirteen, Anton began studying classical guitar after receiving his first instrument from his mother. The guitar quickly became his primary musical voice, though his curiosity would eventually lead him toward keyboards, bass, recording and production as well.

Music and technology developed side by side. During his teenage years Anton became fascinated with sound engineering and the process of recording. By eighteen he had written his first complete song, Shipwreck, and was performing in coffee houses around Charlotte, North Carolina.

Wanting to understand not only how music was written but how it could be captured and shaped, Anton studied Sound Recording Engineering in a 16-track studio environment. That experience became an important foundation for the way he would later approach composing and producing his own work.

His life subsequently took him across several countries, including Spain and the Netherlands, before he returned to the United States to complete a degree in Electrical Engineering. During this period he discovered MIDI technology and began working more extensively with keyboards and electronic instruments.

He gradually built his first home studio, bringing together analog recording equipment and emerging digital technology. Albums such as Jon Anderson’s Olias of Sunhillow, with their dense layers, unusual textures and immersive atmosphere, became important reference points as Anton began developing his own approach to arranging and recording.

Anton’s path as an artist was never a straight line. While pursuing a professional career and raising a family in New Jersey, music remained a constant thread. He continued writing, recording and performing, playing with local musicians while steadily expanding his home studio and developing his own material.

Original music was always the main attraction. Even when playing in bands, Anton was more interested in creating something new than simply reproducing familiar songs. Over time, his collection of guitars, keyboards and recording equipment grew alongside an increasingly personal catalogue of compositions.

In the early 2000s, a series of circumstances led Anton to create ProgRockRadio.com. What began as a way of supporting the music he loved became a much larger connection to the international progressive rock community. The station introduced listeners to both established and emerging artists and created relationships that would eventually become important to Anton’s own recording career.

During this period he reconnected musically with bassist Vinnie Puryear and began working with Rave Tesar of Renaissance. That collaboration became central to the development of Anton’s first album, Dreamer.

Released in 2007 through Umbrello Records, Dreamer introduced Anton’s music to a wider progressive audience. The album combined layered keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, atmospheric arrangements and melodic songwriting. It featured drummers Rich Berends of Mastermind and Charles DesCarfino, with Rave Tesar contributing significantly to the keyboard arrangements. The cover artwork by Michael Phipps provided a visual counterpart to the album’s dreamlike character.

Seven years later, The Plight of Lady Oona pushed Anton’s sound further. Released in 2014, the album featured musicians including Kendall Scott, Michael Frasche and Pieter van Hoorn of Knight Area. Its title track also included a guest vocal appearance by Annie Haslam of Renaissance, adding another connection between Anton’s contemporary work and the progressive music that had inspired him for decades.

After returning to the Netherlands, Anton entered another period of writing, recording and artistic development. The result was The Ballad of General Jupiter, released in January 2026 through MoonJune Records. The album brought together years of musical experience, storytelling and production into what became his most expansive work to date.

Its release also opened a new chapter for Anton as a live artist. In 2026 he performed in Belgium and Italy, including an appearance at the MoonJune Festival, alongside smaller and more intimate performances that highlighted another side of his music: simply voice, guitar and song.

After decades of composing, performing, recording and supporting other artists, Anton’s journey remains very much in motion. The road to recognition has been long, but it has allowed his music to develop without being rushed by fashion or expectation.

His work today reflects that history: progressive without being confined by genre, atmospheric without losing the song, and carefully produced without sacrificing the human fingerprints that give music its character.
